Some stones you wear. Selenite is one you keep nearby to take care of the rest. Named for Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon, it looks exactly like its name sounds — pale, luminous, almost liquid light held still.

What Selenite is

Selenite is a crystallized form of gypsum — a soft, water-soluble mineral that grows in long, striated wands with a satin sheen. It is genuinely soft (just 2 on the Mohs scale, softer than a fingernail), which is the one thing to know before you own it: Selenite and water do not mix.

What Selenite means

In crystal tradition, Selenite is the stone of clarity, peace, and cleansing. It is associated with the Crown chakra and is best known for one remarkable property: it is said to cleanse and recharge other crystals without ever needing to be cleansed itself.

This is why almost every guide in The Journal ends by mentioning Selenite. Rest a bracelet or a tumbled stone on a Selenite slab overnight, and tradition holds that it lifts away whatever the stone has absorbed — no water, no sunlight, no smoke required. It is the simplest cleansing method there is, which makes a Selenite wand or plate the most useful thing a new collector can own.

How to care for Selenite

1. Keep it dry. Never soak or rinse Selenite — water will dissolve its surface over time. Dust it with a dry, soft brush.
2. Handle gently. At Mohs 2 it scratches easily; store it apart from harder stones.
3. Recharge it in moonlight. A full-moon windowsill is all it asks.
