Can You Engrave a Crystal? What's Possible on Stone
It's one of our favorite questions, because the answer is almost always “yes — let's talk about how.” Engraving turns a beautiful object into a personal one: a name, a date, a single word you want to keep close. Here's what's possible, and where honesty matters.
Metal engraving — the part we've perfected
On metal, engraving is a known art. We have a well-established process, so a name, initial, coordinate, or short phrase comes out crisp and consistent every time. If you want a piece engraved and it has a metal surface — a tag, a pendant, a band — we can almost certainly do exactly what you picture.
Engraving on stone — beautiful, but it depends
Laser engraving directly on a crystal is where it gets interesting, because stone is not one material — it's hundreds. What's possible depends on three things:
- Stone type: A dense, even stone like Onyx or Hematite takes a clean mark; a sparkly or layered stone behaves very differently under a laser.
- Size: The larger the flat surface, the more detail we can hold. Tiny beads are far more limited than a palm-sized piece.
- Texture: A smooth, polished face engraves clearly; a raw or druzy surface won't hold fine lettering the same way.
Points, tumbles & keepsakes
Beyond jewelry, we also engrave pieces like crystal points and tumbled stones — the kind of keepsake that sits on a desk, an altar, or a nightstand. A tumbled stone with a single word, or a point marked with a date, makes a quietly meaningful gift.
