What the Root chakra is

The Root chakra (Muladhara) sits at the base of the spine. In this tradition it governs your sense of safety, stability, and belonging — the felt sense that the ground will hold you. When it is steady, you feel settled and capable. When it is shaky, you feel scattered, anxious, ungrounded.

Its color is red, its element is earth, and its stones are the deep, heavy, dark ones that seem to pull you gently downward into your own feet.

The Root chakra stones

• Hematite — for magnetic grounding. Dense and mirror-bright; the classic “come back to your body” stone.
• Obsidian — for absolute protection. Volcanic glass that forms a shield when you feel exposed.
• Onyx — for steadfast strength. For willpower and holding steady under pressure.
• Tiger's Eye — for fierce confidence. Grounding with a spark of courage in it.
• Garnet — for devotion and vitality. A warmer, red-toned root stone that adds energy to stability.

How to work with Root stones

1. Wear them low. A bracelet or anklet keeps grounding stones near your base and in constant, quiet contact.
2. Hold one when anxious. The weight of Hematite in the palm is a small, real anchor in a spinning moment.
3. Pair with bare feet. Stand on the earth or floor while you hold the stone — grounding, doubled.
