The New Moon Ritual: Planting Intentions with Crystals

The New Moon Ritual: Planting Intentions with Crystals
Ritual and Timing series banner

Welcome to Ritual & Timing — a Monday series on working with the moon, the seasons, and the sky. We begin where every cycle begins: the new moon.

The new moon is the dark pause before the sky begins to fill again — the quietest point in the lunar month, and the traditional time to plant intentions. Nothing is visible yet, which is exactly the point: you are setting seeds, not harvesting them.

Why the new moon?

For as long as people have watched the sky, the new moon has marked beginnings. Its energy is inward and fresh — less about doing, more about deciding. If the full moon is for release, the new moon is for intention.

A simple new-moon ritual

  1. Clear the space. Rest your stones on a Selenite plate and take a slow breath. Dim the lights.
  2. Write one intention. Not ten — one. Phrase it as if it is already becoming true.
  3. Choose a stone to hold it. Sit with a crystal while you set the intention, so the two are linked in your mind.
  4. Carry it. Wear or pocket that stone through the coming weeks as a quiet reminder of what you planted.

Stones for new-moon intentions

  • Labradorite — for magic & possibility. The stone of transformation, for intentions about change.
  • Moonstone — for new beginnings. Lunar to its core; the classic new-moon companion.
  • Clear Quartz — to amplify. Worn beside any stone, it strengthens the intention you set.
  • Amazonite — for honest goals. Helps you name what you actually want.
No special tools required. A candle, a stone, one honest sentence, and a few quiet minutes are enough.

Not sure which stone fits your intention? Take the Find Your Stone quiz or draw one from the Crystal Oracle.
