The Solar Plexus Chakra: Where You Find Your Fire

We have stood on the ground of the root and drifted in the waters of the sacral — and now we climb to the place where the body keeps its heat. The solar plexus chakra sits just above the navel, in the soft hollow beneath the ribs, and the old traditions called it manipura — ‘the city of jewels.’ It is the third of the seven centers, and its element is fire: the small, steady flame of will that turns wanting into doing.

Where the sacral asks what do I want?, the solar plexus asks the braver question that comes next — and will I act on it? This is the seat of confidence, of self-worth, of the quiet certainty that our choices matter and our efforts count. When it burns clean, we feel capable and clear; we set a boundary without apologising, begin a thing without waiting for permission. When it dims, we second-guess, we shrink, we hand our power to other people to hold. You feel it, often, right there in the gut — the flutter before you speak up, the knot before you decide.

Its stones are the colour of that fire: honey, amber, old gold, the yellow of afternoon sun on stone. They are the ones I reach for when I need to remember that I am allowed to take up room.

Citrine — bottled sunlight

Citrine is the brightest of the three, a stone the colour of cider held to the light. It has long been called the merchant’s stone, kept in tills and pockets for the confidence and good fortune it was said to bring — but I love it less for luck than for its sheer warmth. It is hard to hold a piece of citrine and stay small. It seems to say: go on, then. When you have talked yourself out of something you know is yours to do, this is the stone to sit with.

Pyrite — the stone that asks you to move

If citrine is warmth, pyrite is nerve. Its bright metallic faces earned it the old nickname fool’s gold, but there is nothing foolish about what it steadies in us — a sense of capability, of follow-through, of being someone who finishes what they start. I keep pyrite near work that frightens me a little. It is the stone for the leap, not the daydream, and it does not let you dawdle at the edge.

Tiger’s Eye — the grounded gaze

Where citrine lifts and pyrite pushes, tiger’s eye holds you level. Its bands of gold and brown shift as they catch the light — a shimmer the gem trade calls chatoyancy — and the effect is exactly its gift: clear sight without losing your footing. It is a courage that keeps its head, the stone for the decision you want to make wisely rather than merely bravely. When confidence tips toward recklessness, tiger’s eye brings it home.

Working with the solar plexus stones

There is no wrong way, but here are the ways I love best:

  • Wear one at the waist or in a pocket, close to the centre it speaks to, so your hand can find it before a hard conversation.
  • Set citrine where you work, and let its colour be the first warm thing you see in the morning.
  • Hold pyrite for a moment before you begin the task you have been avoiding — one breath, one clear intention, then start.

A small practice: The solar plexus loves warmth and breath. The next time you feel yourself shrinking, rest a piece of tiger’s eye against your stomach, breathe slowly into the space beneath your ribs, and finish this sentence out loud — I am allowed to… — then let the smallest true answer be enough.

None of this is a cure or a claim; it is a way of paying attention. A stone will not hand you courage you have not earned. But it can be a reminder, warm in the hand, that the fire you are looking for was already yours — and sometimes a reminder is all we need to begin.

If you are not sure which of the three is yours, our two-minute quiz is a lovely place to start, and you can always wander the full collection on the crystals page.

Next Friday we climb to the very centre — the heart, where love and grief and tenderness live, with its green and rose-pink stones of rose quartz, aventurine, jade, and malachite. Come with an open chest.
